Children's Yoga including
Additional Needs
Teaching children is one of the most beautiful ways to spread the teachings. At these ages it can be so important to understand some simple techniques to be able to use in certain situations, whether it be anger, stress, anxiety, nerves. Regulating emotions can be challenging for everyone and children go through a lot as well, especially as the brain is still developing. There are so many tools available and being able to access these from toddlers all the way through to adult life can truly be life-changing.
Yoga has proven to be highly effective in improving body awareness, concentration, improved focus, and self-regulation skills in children. It promotes relaxation, mindfulness, and stress reduction, which can greatly benefit children with additional needs who may face unique challenges in their daily lives. By introducing yoga into their routine, we can create a nurturing environment that fosters their holistic development.
After School Yoga Clubs are always a lot of fun. The children seem to really enjoy and appreciate the safe space created to move their bodies and share their imagination. All the wonderful children get the chance to add to each class through an imagination filled yoga adventure, where they are encouraged to express a scene or character or animal on route and demonstrate that through yoga poses. Expression through colouring mandalas or journaling is welcomed at every lesson, if the child wishes to have some 'chill in' time. Every student is met where they are at, at that particular moment, whether they have had a busy day and need some rest and recovery, or perhaps they have excess energy which can be channelled into some appropriate breathing activities and express yourself yoga poses or games.
As a mother of two young children, I can relate to those moments of tantrums or days where it's just a 'no day' from that child. These are all OK, it happens, we as adults have these, but we are able to express it in a much more reserved way. Children need to be supported at these times as well, and taught some helpful ways to aid these big emotions in a way which leaves them feeling in control of their own mental and physical well-being.
Children sometimes go through just as much daily stress, anxiety, and worries as us adults can go through. This is so important to recognize and understand so that we can compassionately and lovingly support and appreciate each individual on each day.
As a trained Additional and Special Needs Yoga Teacher, I feel very passionate about sharing these yoga teachings with each individual and their special gifts. During my training, it was wonderful to learn so many different and unique techniques and ways to adapt absolutely everything and so much more to children with additional needs. This is essential to allow each and every child to experience the beauty of yoga in every single way. Yoga really is for every 'body' and is met wherever the child needs it, at every particular moment.
